I learned a new word last fall: Triskaidekaphilia.
Triskaidekaphilia is a word of Greek origin, meaning “love of the number 13”. I think 13 gets a bad rap, dear reader; there are more fearsome and wretched things in this world than the number that follows 12 and precedes 14. I was charmed by the word, and when I found this cable pattern, with cable turns at row 5 & 13, I knew exactly what to do!
I’ve designed the Triskaidekaphilia beanie using Dye Mad Yarns’ Minnie DK in a perfect, warm orange. I designed this hat for my husband, who was kind enough to model for these photos and picked Dye Mad Yarn’s “Cheez-it” color, an homage to the cheesy crackers developed and made in Dayton, OH! It uses less than 1 skein of a squishy, round DK, works up quickly, and is one-size-fits-everyone-I’ve-tried-it-on. This pattern is intuitive and has just enough interest to keep you engaged.

I’ve tried it on heads that range from 20.5-23.5” and it fits them all perfectly fine! Outside of that range, it’s easy to increase or decrease your stitch count by one or more cable repeats (pattern repeat is 10 stitches). Adjust the length of your hat to fit your taste, with decrease options every 4 rounds. Because of the elasticity of this ribbed fabric, this hat works best as a beanie style, fitting close to your head.
If you knit one, please share it on social media with the hashtag #TriskaidekaphiliaBeanie and tag me @donitathefiberista so I can see how yours turned out! You can also share your project on Ravelry!
Dye Mad Yarns website is hosting the pattern instructions, but if you prefer a PDF version to keep on your device, there’s a download link below.
Thanks to my friends at Dye Mad Yarns for yarn support for this pattern!

Embrace your Triskaidekaphilia!
P.S. … and if your Wi$h Li$t includes an Easter Egg hunt, there are at least 13 in this pattern… 🫶
